Helen Boulding
New Red Dress

As a reviewer, it’s hard to know if it’s fair to ever make a comparison between artists, as surely an artist needs to be an individual.

However, considering this is the debut album of Helen Boulding, for our benefit here’s a simple comparison. Boulding has a mix of Natalie Imbruglia in the vocals combined with the musical flair as heard from an early LeAnn Rimes.

There is a bit of country folk in this girl for sure. Now, can you hear something of the like playing through you head? This may be what you will experience when you come across Helen Boulding. It is by no means a bad combination, especially if you like that sort of thing.

Now, let’s leave the Natalie Imbruglia/LeAnn Rimes similarities alone and talk about the singer behind this musical mask.

A natural at making music, it sounds as if the music flows through this woman’s veins and has done from childhood. Music occasionally comes across a singer/song writer/ musician, and yet only a few make it through the net.

A dab hand on the piano, guitar, flute and saxophone nonetheless, these songs transpire as a ‘diary of time’ recounting Helen’s life experiences and stories. Especially in the tails known as the songs Copenhagen, Sleepwalking and the one entitled IDKWIW (after listening, it’s a good guess that it stands for the lyrics I Don’t Know What I Want).

This album would certainly make a good Mothers Day present - ideal timing too, as it is shortly upon us. However, there won’t be many men who would choose to listen to love songs and childhood memories, upbeat as they may be. It’s a bold suggestion to make, but condemning this album as ‘one for the mums’ is about right – but it is one they will appreciate at least.
