The Envy Corps have received rave reviews in America for their series of atmospheric songs, but now they’re bringing their sound to the UK shores.
Signed to Vertigo records, the four piece indie-rock band from Ames, Iowa, supported the Killers last year on their US tour. Now they’re giving a taster to the British public with a four track EP.
Generally, the band produce ambience and an uplifting feel with a sound similar to that of Radiohead, Aqualung, Modest Mouse and Doves.
Opening track Story Problem has a feel similar to Modest Mouse’s Float On to it, with spindling guitars over a marching like drum beat.
Track number two Sylvia (the Beekeeper) is simple yet effective. Written about the life of troubled poet Sylvia Plath, this song combines a simple keyboard tune along with the sweet vocals of lead singer Luke Pettipoole. The chorus opens up a more up tempo beat and the song is rounded of nicely with a simple repetitive guitar riff.
Rooftop mellows out even more in this acoustic Radiohead style two-minute ballad on the topic of self-regret.
Final track Party Dress is slightly more up-tempo with simple guitars that burst into an even livelier chorus. The stronger vocal performance repeats the words ‘Waste of time’ - something that can’t be said about listening to this CD.
Although it wasn’t anything that much different from other indie-rock tracks, they do succeed in creating catchy, feel good songs that will undoubtedly be sung religiously by a legion of fans.
