Maps
We Can Create

Expect big things for Maps this year, as this is one of the only truly outstanding albums you’re likely to hear in 2007.

Considering the majority of We Can Create was written and recorded in Chapman’s bedroom, many props and kudos are due, and now that he has recruited some friends as additional musicians we can all enjoy Maps as they hit the open road.

The entire album is undeniably uplifting, with vocals at a subtle whisper throughout. Chapman is most definitely a follower of My Bloody Valentine and Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space-era Spiritualized.

The mix of electronic and organic instruments is masterfully executed, leaving one to wonder just how the hell most of this album was recorded in a humble place like a bedroom.

Synths and keys are produced lovingly in every song, creating very textured and rich backgrounds to whisper sweet nothings over. Starting with So Low, So High it’s only natural for a listener to then get their hopes up about the rest of the album.

And if you do, then you’re not likely to be disappointed – We Can Create is full to bursting with fantastic, blissed out songs.

To be honest, it’s difficult to pick out a highlight other than the very start of the album, because it’s all that damn good. However, Glory Verse makes for an absolutely shimmering yet downbeat listen that is likely to leave you pleased but depressed at the same time.

This is then followed by Liquid Sugar, which brings you soaring back into the stratosphere again.

If you’re any kind of follower of music, then Maps should be in your CD collection immediately. Don’t miss out on this band – buy this album, then find where they’re playing live and stalk them.

Buy James Chapman a drink, because he may have written the soundtrack for this year.
