My First Radio
Aiming For The Big Time

A Northampton quartet hopes to quit their day jobs and take their rock band to the next level.

Ross, (lead vocals guitar and keyboards) currently works as an operations manager for a fragrance company, but he hopes to taste the sweet smell of success with his band My First Radio.

The band who are currently touring all over the country, stopped off at The Lamp pub in Hull where they spoke to Bandidge after the gig:

"The Lamp is just the sort of venue we like", comments Ross after the gig.
"It’s just the right size and shape and it has a reputation for putting on decent bands. It's promoted by people with their heads screwed on and most importantly hasn't yet made steps towards becoming a theme pub.
"It's our second appearance in Hull and both gigs have been good."

Ross, along with Dale, (guitar), Simon, (bass), and Kev, (drums, percussion and vocals), play a mixture of loud and quiet music:
"Really loud and really quiet actually", said Ross.
"Layers of guitars competing to shake your eardrums the most, then little tinkering, trying to make you listen as closely as possible.

"It's not an intentional thing though. We didn't have our first rehearsal and say – ‘right guys we're going to be really loud and then make people think they've gone deaf by dropping the dbs’.

"Some people like to call us ‘shoegaze’; some like to call us post-rock, some like to say we sound like Doves or The Verve. In all honesty we just sound like four guys trying to create songs that we'd buy ourselves if someone else made them."

It's been a long slog for the band but following the response from the crowd at the Lamp gig, success could be just around the corner.

Ross said: "The early days playing with My First Radio were probably the bands worst.

"We thought people were just ignoring us. Things picked up though when it turned out that we just weren't pushing ourselves out there in the right light and subsequently we were approached by a few industry type people who wanted to work with us.

"It all ended up with our manager, Trevor Holden, who runs Series 8 Records. He's since got financial support for us, got us the chance to work with some truly fine producers and put us in touch with other people and bands who are sure to eventually come good and help us get a foot up."

Gaining more support at every gig they do, Ross believes the best part of My First Radio is the rest of the band.

He said: "I'd like to say something cool like the free drugs, the girls throwing themselves at us or the kudos you get from the punters, but in reality it's the rest of the band.

"They quickly become the best mates in the world you've ever had and you can live in each other’s pockets without getting annoyed with each other.

"I think the whole creative process that you get washed away in with each other means that being in a band is the only situation where the old cliché 'familiarity breeds contempt' simply fails to ring true."

Looking to the future of the band, it is hoped there will be a release some time this year (2007) on Series 8 Records.

Ross said: "The aim is to do the band thing full time. Effectively that means making enough money for a major label, or at least a sizeable independent to show continued interest in us.

"We're taking the first steps towards that by heading into the studio to work with a top-drawer producer on our first two or three singles.
"Where subsequent singles come from depends greatly on how well received the first one is."
