Jacob Golden
@ Camden Roundhouse

For those who have never been to the Roundhouse in Camden, it’s a two-room venue, with upstairs playing host to a larger venue whilst below is the smaller studio stage setting.

On this icy Friday it was Jacob Golden who played host to this small stage. Who was up above you ask? Someone called Morrissey, oh and Jonathan Ross, but I don’t think he was part of the show…

If this wasn’t enough for Golden, tonight is also the first night of his co-headlining tour with Merz, and so as you would expect the usual first night nerves were present, which were never more obvious than during the opening song as Golden looked almost puppet-like with his twitches of the neck. However for the most part Golden managed to do Revenge Songs justice.

This is even more of an achievement when you consider that on record Golden has different instruments and technological gizmos helping him orchestrate his atmospherically acoustic songs - and a good knowledge of Jeff Buckley as well. But on stage it is just Golden and a guitar, nothing more nothing less, yet he manages to give the song a different edge, for on stage Golden’s voice rather than his guitar take centre stage.

This was at its greatest potency during On A Saturday. The crowd who had stood and watched Golden sweep through two tracks already, simply staring almost trancelike before Golden begged the crowd to join in, insisting that he’d had enough of hearing his own voice and he’d much rather hear theirs.

A slight slip came when Golden played a previous unreleased song Bluebird, which described the tale of a man’s love affair with music and signing a record deal, as he stumbled with the intro before having to begin again. Is this a bio-song? Not by the sounds of it, it is however an encouraging nod that Golden is still writing songs of the standard that appears on Revenge Songs.

In an unusual twist Golden ended his set with the last two songs of the album. The adrenaline fuelled Hold Your Hair Back and the despair filled Zero Integrity with Golden leaving the stage to the lyrics “I know I messed around a lot before I fell for you but no-one’s even loved you like I do”, a fitting end to performance which Golden as well as the small crowd assembled genuinely enjoyed.

Not something that can be said for all the performances in the Camden area that night…
