It seems nowadays that in order to be in a band, the simple tried and tested formula of having a guitarist, drummer, bassist and singer looks dated.
Nowadays having a person who can do bleepy sounds on a keyboard, a guitarist who can also double up as a keytar player, a rapper/singer and a drummer who dabbles in synthesisers is a formula much suited to 2007.
And this is exactly what Hadouken! are. Supported by Shut Your Eyes and You’ll Burst Into Flames who offer us some rather modern grooves and a massively interesting set.
However with a majority of the crowd looking like they’ve just walked away from a disastrous day-glo experiment and chanting Hadouken!, it seems that you could have had Joy Division stood up there and nobody would have cared.
So surprisingly early, Hadouken! take the stage. They tear into the crowd with an energetic start. Liquid Lives whips the crowd into frenzy and several songs later it doesn’t look like it will abate. But however much energy the band create it can’t change the fact that the substance of songs for Hadouken! are simply not there.
The starts of songs seem to be mired with all sounding the same. It’s only when you get to the chorus that half the audience know which song is being played. James starts to look bored and wonders to the back on several separate occasions.
However when your attention starts to wane, Hadouken! strike back and end the set with a flurry of cracking songs. The Bounce, Tuning In and 2007’s creeper hit That Boy That Girl that ends with a rabble-rousing electro crescendo.
So after this sold out tour of Britain, what have we learnt about Hadouken!? We’ve learnt that they’ve a long way to go before they’re taken more seriously than simply being 2007’s buzz band.
However we’ve also learnt that they’ve got the attitude and the fan base to have those doubters eating out of the palms of their hands by the end of the year.
