Met by a warm crowd in Nottingham’s chilly Arena, Maroon 5 kick off their small UK tour showcasing the new album It Wont Be Soon Before Long.

Guitarists James Valentine and Mickey Madden are accompanied by new drummer Matt Flynn, Jesse Carmichael on keyboards and the dominant presence of lead singer Adam Levine on stage. Sporting a shaved head and a dodgy chequered shirt he swooned his way into the hearts of the adoring screaming girls all clambering near the front.

And there was knickers thrown. Should we have expected less? What we did expect and certainly get was an outstanding performance from a band that are clearly incredibly talented at what they do. As a band, they definitely have the ability to capture you with the mixture of songs from both the new and old album.

Levine was undoubtedly the main focus heading the performance of the group. His powerful and diverse use of vocals were mixed with his impressive guitar playing. On top of that he whipped out a small drum solo. The set guys were on top form.

Opening up with Harder to Breathe seemed like a bizarre choice compared with some of their larger hits. But they pulled it back, following with Sunday Morning.

There was an impressive light show going on with some real mood-setting colours to set the passionate songs like This Love and deep backdrops for an acoustic beginning to She Will Be Loved.

But being the cheeky guy he is, Adam can’t help but slip in a personal opinion or two. He told fans that although they have always made him feel welcome in the UK, the press hadn’t been so warm. All prompting him to encourage critics to “go fuck themselves”.

Which doesn’t help does it Adam? But then again if we are going on the music element of their performance, you really will be impressed. Its probably ‘the press’ that should watch out, or maybe they will get sworn at again. Scary!
