Kate Nash
@ Reading Fez Club

Despite only one single being put out and an album which doesn’t even have a release date, Kate Nash managed to almost fill the Fez Club in Reading with people quite happy to sing along to her jaunty pop songs.

Nash, who is touted as the ‘Next Lilly Allen’ rattled through a 40 minute set of all the songs which have cemented her as a MySpace hit.

Nash played a mixture of released and unreleased songs. Many of these songs appeared to be the finished article and so will hopefully appear on Nash’s much-fabled album. The highlights of these were Birds, Mouthwash and the previously released single Merry Happy.

Seeming slightly nervous, she skipped between her keyboard and piano, showing the signs that she may be more talented than the tags she has been given suggest.

This is further emphasised when she is actually playing, she possesses a child like enthusiasm for music, and is competent at what she does.

However, she has not yet managed to gain a stage presence, for when the music stopped so did Nash, resorting to nervous chatter and laughter; she was almost dazed by the nightclub lights.

This is something that Nash will gain in time if the music she plays is anything to go by. You can’t help but pick up on the catchy turns of phrase and clap along melodies that lace her songs.

This is what Kate Nash enjoys. The novelty of music hasn’t worn off and she hasn’t been sucked up by the music industry…yet. She managed to make herself and the whole crowd leave feeling very ‘merry happy.’
