Rodrigo Y Gabriela
@ Nottingham Rock City

“Fuck Stairway!”

No, you haven’t walked into an adolescent’s room that is trying to impersonate an explicit Wayne’s World rip-off parody– you’ve actually joined a rammed Rock City crowd to witness one of the best bands you could dare to experience.

Gradually gaining notoriety since the start of the millennium, Rodrigo Y Gabriela have busked their way into the public conscience as they prove tonight, performing as an acoustic/jazz/metal-influenced hybrid is nowhere near novelty.

It’s actually straight-up brilliance.

And as we witness Rodrigo Sanchez grinning like a Cheshire cat after his tongue-in-cheek putdown of Led Zeppelin’s classic, you realise it’s not going to be a conventional gig.

No setlists are used and crowd interaction is as vital to every song as the actual playing itself. Clapping, clicking, chanting, singing and requesting tracks make the night a unique event.

Whilst many rockstars wouldn’t dream of coming down from their pedestal to mix with the ‘minions’, Rodrigo Y Gabriela sit upon their raised platform and invite you up to party with them. Any egos should be checked in at the cloakroom tonight.

Moulding in covers that included Metallica’s Orion, Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water, Dave Brubeck’s Take Five as well as Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and Stairway…, there were 90 minutes of constant intrigue and spontaneous joy to savour.

They don’t half make a racket too. You’re forgiven for thinking there are secret percussionists situated in the wings as they pluck and pound their guitars into balsa wood, with Rodrigo leading the charge and Gabriela’s hand movements resembling a human chain gun as it spins and rotates at a near-constant blur.

The only blotch on this masterpiece tonight was the sheer ignorance of parts of the crowd, who congregated at the bar and succeeded in drowning out delicate and moving moments with their no-one cares conversation.

Ignorance aside, no other act could pull off the same song (Tamacun) four times and be praised for it; raising the intensity on every listen before the blood pumping finale.

No other act like this could get people dancing, even moshing for a few sporadic moments and have characters from all walks of life form together to enjoy a spectacle with no prejudice or barriers.

Not only that though, but no other band could pull off the most iconic songs of all time and make them their own, as well as producing stunning pieces of work with seemingly little effort.

Adolescents use the expression “You need this in your life!” on an infrequent basis to describe pop-culture hyperbole. Rodrigo Y Gabriela, however are the embodiment of life itself. We’re really not worthy…
