The Elementalists are five highly skilled musicians playing their own style of live hip-hop - what they affectionately refer to as Prog Hop.

They appeal to an audience of genuine music lovers who appreciate an eclectic mix of styles. Not wishing to be pigeon holed as purely hip hop, their tunes contain a mixture of funk, electronica, soul, dub, break-beat and drum and bass, all unashamedly coming from an angle that reflects their personal backgrounds and beliefs.

Lyrically unconventional, they shun the current hip-hop trend to embrace materialism but rather opt for light-hearted attacks on modern consumer and celebrity culture. The bands’ appeal comes from their honesty, humour and pleasure of performing live.

E.P. Review - Crazed Maniac

In no more than 25 words, explain what makes you different to what’s out there already…

"Hip-Hoppers with live drums, a savant guitar player, synth bass, a rapping piano player and a didgeridoo playing scratch DJ – Not another one!"

It’s a wet and windy Tuesday evening in February and you’re on tour. Why should people venture out to come see you?

"’Cus we’re high energy, high passion and we have something to say – but with a sense of humour about it. We have live VJing from Visual Hybrid and we put on a live show to put dreary indie guitar bands to shame. We also give away free stuff, including hugs at the end of the show."

Are you currently holding down other jobs? If so, what are they, and would you recommend them to other aspiring artists in need of cash?

"We are either music teachers or club owners or sound engineers – it’s not great money but it keeps you in the game."

You’re on top of a soapbox, telling everyone where you aspire to be in five years time. Where do you aim to be, and what’s your mission statement?

"All we want is to be making music we like and other people like. If we can still be doing that in five years time without becoming corporate sell-outs regurgitating the same soulless music album after album, we’ll be very happy.

Haven’t really thought about our mission statement before, but I guess it would be keep it pure, true and honest…forget about the hair cuts and think about the music!"

For a bonus point – tell us a joke! You don’t have to, but if you feel the urge…

"Why did the girl fall of the swing?

She had no arms."
