It’s fair to say that nobody really knows what music from Lapland is supposed to sound like, so luckily this Sami duo have the benefit of a clean slate on their hands.
Adjagas have taken all the best bits from local culture (the rhythmic chanting and gypsy melodies) and have managed to translate it into something a lot more finely tuned.
It would be easy to simply pass this off as ‘world music’, but the subtle way all their local influences have been refined showcase a real effort to make modern music, and not just a tribal sing song.
On the first listen, this is pretty much all it sounds like. Two people quite nicely chanting to a melody. But the more inspiring B-side Mun Ja Mum does prove that local influences needn’t be a hindrance in modern music, even if it’s not going to top the charts any time soon. |
