“Imagine the love child of the B52’s and Wham, produced by Nile Rodgers,” says MySpace. “Voila, you have Alphabeat!”
Never has Myspace been so correct.
Denmark-born pop band Alphabeat are a name any serious music fanatic has at least heard of. Known for their bright colours and happy-clappy music, the infectious six-piece are back with Fascination, released with various remixes rather than a traditional B-side choice.
Fascination has a suspiciously High School Musical air about it, and it should probably come with a full-on cheesiness warning label slapped on the jewel case.
Lyrically, Alphabeat could be so much better and more varied. Perhaps it’s a case of lost in translation, but often they don't quite make sense: “We love this exaltation (woh oh, o-o-oh) / We want the new temptations (woh oh, o-o-o-oh) / It's like a revelation (woh oh, o-o-oh) / We live on fascination.” Annoyingly, though, it’s still ridiculously catchy!
A track with no real sense or meaning, it’s obviously relegated to the dumper of inane club cheese anthems. It’s an ideal guilty pleasure, guaranteed to have you grinning at your iPod as you skip down the street.
Just don’t ever admit that you own it to anyone. Ever.
