It’s been a while since we last heard from the cello phenomenon that is Apocalyptica, but they’re finally back with brand spanking new material and their unique meta-classical style.
S.O.S (Anything but Love) is the first single to be released from their eagerly anticipated new album. Judging from this latest offering - which features the powerful vocals of Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia, no less! - Apocalyptica clearly have no intention of diverting from their dark love metal roots.
Sadly, Scabbia’s vocals somehow manage to overthrow the track though, and the distinctive cello work in the background is swamped by her powerful vocals. Any unique sound is lost, and it all just sounds like yet another Lacuna Coil offering.
The orchestrated work sounds as good as ever, and proves Apocalyptica’s ability to create dark, heavy music with classical instruments. There’re are plenty of beautiful little cello riffs to make you listen in awe, and it all provides an amazing, soothing background for Scabbia’s belting.
There’s no doubt that it’s a beautiful song with strong lyrics and an incredible sound. But Apocalyptica’s publicity stunts are starting to wear thin - covering Metallica tracks and dragging in guest vocalists are all well and good, but they’d be better off letting their fantastic, original material speak for itself.
