Battles
Atlas

Atlas is rather eccentric, to say the very least. But then again, that’s what you come to expect from a band boasting a member of math-rock crazies Don Caballero.

Allsorts of strange studio-processed vocals blanket the sparse drum backbone to leave a very confusing introduction. Parts of the octaver-abused end of the vocals sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks fed through a blender and given a fat bag of ‘shrooms each. And you know what? That’s actually a good thing. Somehow, it works. After you’re done laughing at it, of course.

The track really comes into its own at around the 2:20 mark, and the rock truly begins. And holy shit, does it begin. You can only find this sort of complete madness on a label like Warp, and we should all be grateful for it.

One guitar weaves a playful, circus-like lead part over the machinelike makings of the song, only for the whole track to regress into something sounding not at all human.

The track ends with delay/loop abuse and only then do you realise that the whole thing is actually seven minutes long. And you want more. In which case, you’ll have to buy their album, Mirrored. Judging by this song it’s not out of the ordinary to seriously get your hopes up.

This is definitely one for the avant-garde crowd, and is endlessly rewarding after repeated listens.
