Black Grass
Bass Man

Whisper it, but summer is starting to get off its lazy behind on the other side of the world and make the long trek to our shores.

If that isn’t something to crack open a toothy grin (and a cold beverage) about, then Black Grass may be able to help you along the way. From the second that Bass Man reaches into the room with its reggae/dance roots exposed like midriffs on Brighton beach in July, there is little room for being afraid of a little UV exposure.

Aided by the vocal prowess of reggae mainstay Benjammin’ who takes great joy in freestyling his vocal beat over the top of the popping beat, the trumpets and shimmying guitar lines will him on as the intensity starts to reach the regularly serviced level of ‘Fever Pitch’.

Any dust that considers tumbling earthward after Bass Man heads for the bar is swiftly given a size eleven boot up its minute backside as the East Coast hip-hop of Set It Straight provides another reason to be cheerful.

As a flamenco-honed guitar noodles along, the bassline pops out beats that take it back “to where it’s meant to be”, according to guest MC impresario J-Live. With the addition of turntable scratches book-ending the chorus section into familiar territory, it’s hard to not be charmed by the traditional tune on show.

Sometimes it’s better to not question and go with the gut. As Benjammin’ gleefully recites the line of: “Dance music make me feel high/Don’t ask me how, cause I don’t know why” on Bass Man, it’s an easy statement to agree comprehensively with.
