Sunshine! Love! Optimism! Summer! Play Cazals’ latest little number and everything suddenly comes up roses!
It’s nearly impossible to not fall in love with the group just on this one song alone. Instead of pining after one individual, it throws the doors wide open to all and sundry, with the chorus: “Somebody loves me/Somebody somewhere”, which is rasped out with as much enthusiasm as two randy dogs in spring.
Mix in a few elements of Pong within the introduction and an ‘indie-rock’ vibe that will get the ears wagging of Bloc Party obsessives, and things are off to a flyer. As Phil’s vocals encroach the eardrums, fans of Haunts may also be lured in with the slight resemblance to their very own Banks’ semi-warped vowel eccentricity.
Instead of then drifting off into a netherworld somewhere between ‘ethereal’ and their backsides, Cazals then surprise and thrill with a lyrical and musical one-two that could threaten to keep Joe Calzaghe on the canvas. If the cheeky line of “I’m just a hopeless romantic with a dirty mind” fails to move your lips in an upward curvature, then the resulting chorus will do just so.
With all of the positivity, there is a slight cloud to darken the blithe proceedings. B-side Success does hint at a fairly similar musical blueprint, which does cheapen its overly positive demeanour. Hopefully it’s not the pinnacle of Cazals’ achievements, as on this showing, they’re sounding ruddy marvellous.
