The Courteeners have been making headway around the indie circuit for a short while, building a reputation since their first single release last year – Cavorting.
Led by the pleasantly jangly opening riff, Liam Fray’s stereotypical indie vocals kick in after a few bars. While the voice is nothing groundbreaking, the lyrics become the most interesting point of the song. “Are you just like plasticine / Being moulded into a libertine dream / I feel so sorry for you”, Liam accuses his musical contemporaries of being stale and moulded in the shape of a band who need no name.
Managing to be both witty and cynical at the same time, Fray’s lyrics do achieve what the aim of pointing fingers at many bands. However; this is, ultimately, the song’s biggest drawback. While the lyrics are very critical and self-righteous, the music fails to live up to the same standard. Fray’s voice does nothing to stand out from the crowd, while the drums move along in a simple 4/4 beat, backing the guitar that loses its way after the intro riff.
This creates a very big problem, as Fray has openly stated that his songs are some of the best he’s heard from anyone in a while and that The Courteeners are different from the rest of the current indie pack. However, musically, it does nothing to support those notions. While it is a good current indie song, it falls into the very same mould that it aims to avoid.
Acrylic is a very good modern indie song that fits well with the current scene; however it lets itself down by being too big for its boots. For a band being touted as the next “Next Big Thing”, The Courteeners are going to have to humble themselves if they’re going to get anywhere near the title.
