Crystal Castles
Courtship Dating

If you’re not familiar with the name yet, then you soon will be.

Crystal Castles, the Canadian-based duo of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass have been garnering a swift reputation for being a genre bending, hotly tipped breakthrough group, with the sounds of an old Atari 5200 sound chip at the heart of their keyboard – and their music.

Courtship Dating is a key example of their musical mechanics, with a proliferation of shrieks and beeps from the revived eighties computer system being jabbed in between a call and response shrill of Glass on vocals. It’s incredibly abrasive as well as faintly reminiscent of former Bandidge favourites Hearts Revolution.

With their self-titled LP getting a full release in the UK on April 28, this is merely a statement setter for the forthcoming release. It’s neither truly dire, or something that can be seen as a whole new president in musical interpretation and form.

Compared to the raw, unhinged inner-beauty of Alice Practice, this fails to reach the same heights. Whether this is because the electronic scuzz-fuck on show can’t work on a diluted, slower pseudo-mainstream level remains to be seen, but it’s hard to make up too many conclusions yet.

It’s not really fan-conversion friendly, but it won’t drive people away with a 10ft barge pole – yet. They may be hyped, but the jury is still out for now...
