Wow, I’m stuck in a time warp!
The Checks’ single Take Me There certainly does just that. Its 70’s garage rock melodies are produced with such a rustic feel that you would be fooled into thinking that this could well be a re-release of an old LP.
It doesn’t plod along whilst collecting nostalgic cobwebs though; it positively goes out of its way to make sure it blows away any remnants of not only spiders, but also any hearing you may have with a fantastically rattling tune.
Ed Knowles’ vocals are so on edge, you can almost hear his sanity (and vocal chords) slowly unravelling all over the single whilst the brilliantly soulful chorus takes the song from deeply distressed to incredibly glorious.
Pitching in somewhere between the Rolling Stones and Free, it scrubs up something close to a version of Keith Richards that you would feel slightly safer on introducing to your other half.
Ian Broudie has done a diamond job on shaping this song into a rockabilly riot. Using his knack of pumping out intensely catchy numbers from over the years, he’s given these Auckland boys a straight-up hit.
