From the minute you hear The Checks’ lead singer Ed Knowles’ voice growl at you through the speakers, you are drawn in to What You Heard.
The five-piece band from Auckland, New Zealand, has created a sound that would not be out of place on an album by such bands as Jet, The Strokes or The Datsuns. The energetic guitar riffs and accompanying bass line create your limbs to move inadvertently to the beat of the tune.
If the listener had as much energy as the song contains they would want to stomp non-stop for hours. If it was a confectionary it would be like popping candy. Sweet to the taste and full of the popping energy that makes everything worthwhile.
The single was previously released in May 2005 in both their native New Zealand and here in the UK. Without any advertising or plugging of the single it reached an amazing 21 in New Zealand and an incredible 62 in the UK.
The song could be one of the singles of the year. You find yourself humming the tune and it gets in your head. It’s not like an annoying tune that you want to get rid of but more a tune that can get you through the monotony of your day.
This is a must for anyone that likes a song that wants to make you get up and bust out some crazy moves at anytime in any place and enjoy doing so.
