After being lauded in the press as a track that sits somewhere between genius and career suicide, The Chemical Brothers have decided to release The Salmon Dance to the masses.
Luckily for them, it probably won’t harm their reputation as they are already firmly placed in the ‘Superstar DJ’ category by most who have partaken in a listen of their back catalogue, as well as recent album We Are The Night.
However, this is all doing Fat Lip (who provides the mic skills) and the ‘Brothers a massive injustice, as this song is rather good. At first, the tale of a salmon’s life coupled with Fat Lip’s tales of “Swimming like a fish while he’s doing the snap” can be too much for many person’s humour levels; but with some patience, it all becomes clear.
The mist ascends, and you can see this track for what it is. A song with a beat that offers a universal appeal across ages not seen since Shrek with its beatbox rhythm and wholly innocent spaced out interludes, garnished with a dancefloor tale for the oldies, and a biology lesson for the young’uns.
Not many groups could really get away with this – anyone seen Alien Ant Farm recently? – So it’s hats well and truly off to the Chemical Brothers for pulling an enchanting rabbit out of a normally career-drowning hat.
