Envelopes
Life On The Beach

Indie music needs bands like the Envelopes. This might seem like a little bit of a grandiose statement, but this single is enough to make anyone else think exactly the same way.

Sulking out of the blocks on a sluggish yet incredibly sexy drum groove, Life on the Beach sounds how any Swedish/French Suede tribute band would sound…but with weird coughing noises through the guitar solo, a female co-vocalist and basic - but strangely compelling - lyrics.

Maybe this isn’t the greatest explanation, but it has to be said this is a brilliant piece of music, driven on by a catchy ascending guitar riff and an even catchier chorus. In fact, it’s one of those tracks that makes songwriting sound so effortless that anyone could do it. It must be hard sounding so cool.

If all of the above isn’t enough to make you part with your hard-earned cash for this single, the B-side, Calypso, is almost even better. One part of the second verse is the aforementioned female vocalist (Audrey Pic) saying the word “cabaret” in about three different ways. The song then spreads its wings into a sprawling pop epic with about four parts hung together on a chorus of “I don’t wanna go to school/I don’t wanna go tomorrow”.

This is wonderful, quirky guitar pop that people could be forgiven for thinking didn’t exist anymore. It was available to download since the start of July and is being released physically on August 6. Buy a copy for yourself and each of your friends; you won’t be disappointed. And no, I’m not their publicist.
