The introduction to this latest offering from Girls Aloud might kick start with an epic bang! bang!... but unfortunately it’s all downhill from there.
As the drumbeat kicks in with a fairly breezy melody in tow, there’s an instant ‘80s pop feel with a slight Kylie Minogue kick. It’s a lot more down tempo than previous releases, such as Somethin’ Kinda Ooh, though.
Yeah, so the chorus is catchy. Like Chlamydia. Yeah, so “I can’t speak French / So I let the funky music do the talking” does get stuck in your head after a few listens, but it’s not a good thing. In fact, it’s extremely irritating.
Previous single Sexy (No! No! No!) could have been seen as a bit repetitive, but it was a fast upbeat dance track, so the amount of no/no/no’s weren’t an issue. I Can’t Speak French, on the other hand, is not only repetitive but bland - there’s no real structure to the song, which may be down to the weak and boring verses.
Vocally it’s as polished as ever, though, and it’ll surely make for satisfactory dance floor fodder on a drunken night out. Sadly though, it’s a big disappointment, especially in comparison with the girls’ other releases.
