Goldspot
Friday

Lets face it guys… this summer hasn’t been the greatest.

Rhianna’s Umbrella reigned at the top of the singles chart for ten weeks and since she claimed number one the rain hasn’t stopped. It’s affected everything! Summer sports have struggled to fit in their fixtures, festival goers have spent their weekends of live music in quite a soggy state and, because of the rain, summer feels as if it’s almost over before it even began.

Consequently 2007 has failed to deliver a proper summer indie tune. But never fear dear reader, I may have found a nomination for the title in the form of Goldspot and their new single Friday.

You may have already heard of them due to their presence on the Radio 2 playlist and through their tour supporting the Maccabees. My theory is if you haven’t already heard of them you will soon.

Goldspot caught my eye because, like the lyrics in Friday, they have character. Here at Bandidge we don’t agree with blatant plugging, but if you fancy a giggle check out the bands’ MySpace page to see vocalist Sid play Friday as he flies to the ground from the top of a see-swing. Despite the pain suffered from the fall he continues to play, all be it with a rye smile. Now that’s a sign of a great performer!

The single itself has all the credentials for a summer hit. Firstly the band themselves are from the sunny state of California, making them more then qualified to create a summer classic. The tone of the song is perfect too, its relaxed, smooth and lifting.

Yet the most exciting and memorable aspect of Friday is the vocals. They sit beautifully upon the strumming of the guitar adding to the soothing feeling that only a Friday can give. In truth it is a clever song. The melody and rhythm are simple yet by describing the wonders of Fridays, Goldspot manage to get you in the mood for a proper summers weekend.

And that’s why I nominate it for this years summer tune. It’s the perfect way to start your summer weekend and celebrate the day that is Friday. As the song says: “Today is Friday, it is my day to do what I want”. And with the summer we’ve had we better make the most of them - Goldspot and Fridays that is...
