Footprints in the Sand is the new single to be released by pop sensation Leona Lewis, from her record selling album Spirit.
Far from the two-minute wonders that have previously walked out of the reality talent show X Factor, Leona rocketed straight to pop star status with her Christmas number 1, A Moment Like This, in 2006. Her status is growing still with her latest single featuring as this year’s official song for Sport Relief.
Footprints in the Sand, in typical Leona style,is a powerful ballad with meaningful words and earthy tones. The lyrics: “I promise you/I’m always here” relate perfectly to the issue at hand, with profits of the single going towards some of the world’s poorest countries.
The words are moving and the classic power burst and key change of the last verse are reminiscent of divas such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. However, far from a second class effort, the song is representative of the star’s unquestionable talent and fight to be recognisable as world-class. With such talent, the song is definitely set to bring shivers every time it is played.
The new double A-sided single also includes the inspirational Better in Time from her debut album released last year. The song is far more up tempo than the previous; however, it still carries the same theme of hope amongst sadness. The song is less powerful and not as emotive as Footprints in the Sand, but still follows the easy-listening style of the previous singles.
The two songs create a very moving single and one that should be heard before dismissed, especially for such a worthwhile cause.
