Muse
Knights Of Cydonia

Even before the song was available to buy on Black Holes and Revelations or on their preview listen on Myspace, it was already the track that saw music journalists worldwide wet their pants and scream like schoolgirls in early reviews.

And after the album finally went on sale, the world got to wet their pants in unison and scream as one united front as they all they recited countless times in their mind: “Muse have always been bonkers, but now they’re bonkers with shiny red balls on!”

If you had to imagine an illicit love scene involving Ennio Morricone, Clint Eastwood, Doctor Who, AC/DC and Mars Attacks!, you would be somewhere near describing how the song sounds - but there is also a good chance you would be in therapy.

Starting off with a galloping “ride through the veins of history”, before building up to some grandeur high-noon fist punching, with Matt Bellamy (complete with helium balloon…ahem…high pitched effects layering) telling us to “Fight for our rights” as well as our very survival.

And then in one fell swoop, all the years of lazy Radiohead comparisons get ripped out of the pages of time and replaced with ‘Almighty Stadium Rock Gods’ as Muse rock it up to eleven in only a way Bohemian Rhapsody has done so before.

The titanic riff that follows nearly manages to split the World in two, as the Freddie Mercury for the iPod generation stands forward and shows you who’s boss.

Better go get yourselves some more undercrackers...
