“And the award for the most blindingly straight-forward single title goes to…”
Well, you can probably guess the rest. If Just A Song About Ping Pong followed its sport moniker to the letter, it should then be a song that is kinda fun, but really isn’t something you would play all too often. Fortunately, it’s not the case here.
You probably wouldn’t be inclined to play it every day, but it is definitely something that you could slap on without any real hassle or grievance and enjoy it every time when you do. The Australian teen group (3 girls, 2 boys) infuse playground instrumentation and demi-punk energy into a wonderfully riotous concoction.
The rolling, bounding drumbeat of Tim Commandeur wrapped around the timed handclaps is gleefully easy and allows Amandah Wilkinson’s quick fire vocals to do the rest. When the rest of the band kick in with violins, bass and keyboards slapped on top, it inspires mass crowd lunacy.
To add fuel to the fire, the chants of “cheater!” and “liar!” that show their dismay at foul play ramp up the intensity and show obvious hints as to the wonderfully constructed tunes that could well be on show on their first full-length LP Yes, Yes! Vindictive! that could be out in November.
Go buy, party, and jump around like a loon – this song is brilliant.
