It’s hard to know what to do when a song starts up and you’re graced with a voice that sounds like… well, like Dave Grohl if he hadn’t quite reached puberty yet and had an almost unforgivable passion for country-western…
Listening to Last Chance, you’d never guess that Rushmore hailed from the UK. The country-western guitars, the slight Yankee twang to the vocals… it all screams mid-west America. In truth, Mancunian-born brothers Ed and Neil Ormandy grew up in Devon and recorded their album in Camden.
The track has obvious influences from the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, and a slight resemblance to early Ben Folds Five tracks. Rushmore’s MySpace friends include the likes of Ryan Adams and Ray LaMontagne, and it’s not hard to see why. This single isn’t going to create great musical tidal waves any time soon though.
Lyrically, it’s nothing special; “Can’t waste my life away/ I’m working everyday… Is this my last chance?” Isn’t going to win anyone the Ivor Novello; but you don’t always want deep and meaningful, heart-wrenching music. Sometimes a catchy hook is all you need.
The band have spent time supporting Simply Red and James Morrison, and –again - it’s easy to understand why; they’re mellow easy listening, a band knocking out simple, upbeat music. Which is never a bad thing.
