American Dad!
Series Two

If you couldn’t get outraged enough by Family Guy, then American Dad! has returned to assault your senses!

Now into its second series, Seth Macfarlane (Family Guy, The Winner) along with fellow co-creators Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman turn up the laughter levels by an impressive level.

After its debut season that would lurch between occasional heights of hilarity and standard fodder, the winning formula is finally met with this three-disc box set of brilliance.

It once again evolves around CIA agent and intense Conservative Stan Smith, along with long-suffering wife Francine and teen children Hayley (the ultra liberal) and Steve (the geek), whilst also featuring the exploits of their effeminate alien Roger and goldfish Klaus – who still has the brain of a former Eastern European ski jumper.

In direct comparison to its bigger brother Family Guy, American Dad! concentrates on a storyline throughout without looking to branch off into surreal moments of cultural comedy, and proves to be a winner.

The twenty-minute exchanges again show how timeless the adventures of the Smith family can be. By focusing on the direct storyline, every character is allowed to grow into itself and become as vital as the other.

Prime examples of this include where Stan sends Steve to a refugee camp and where Stan and Francine try and break George Clooney’s heart. The combination of Stan’s total stupidity and aloofness with his family along for the ride is unashamedly fantastic.

The political incorrectness would put a host of people off from watching this series, with more bitingly harsh comments and actions than ever seen before. Even though they are all produced with a tongue firmly implanted within the cheek, sometimes it starts to cut incredibly near to the bone.

But that is where the beauty of American Dad! lies. It dares to provoke and show the flaws of American politics and the world in general. It’s totally absurd and twisted, but it’s also essential viewing.

If you can cope with toilet humour and can find jokes about date rape, every taboo subject known to man or U.S. right-wing policy amusing then this is for you. If not, you’re probably best staying well clear.
