When you put on a DVD that has been produced by a band, you think you know what to expect.
Some stage footage, some backstage footage and that’s your lot. Well, as is becoming the norm for Fat Freddy’s Drop they’ve completely torn up the rulebook and started again.
They have blended together backstage footage and performance footage but they’ve also added in a lot of stuff which appears to be shot from the back of the tour van, taking in most of mainland Europe in the process.
This is what sets out Fat Freddy’s Drop from the rest; this isn’t a concert DVD it’s a tour DVD encompassing the entirety of their European tour taking in Brixton Academy, Barcelona’s Sonar Festival and Paris as well as other destinations. A wonderful catalogue of places, I think you’ll agree.
There is very limited dialogue within the DVD, instead laying over the backstage scenes are live performances of songs from their album Based on a True Story, which means that the DVD lacks those awkward moments which often seem to appear in band DVD’s.
This does lead to some great visual-only moments though; the best one being when the band’s DJ and backup singers walk past the queue waiting for their show and don’t get recognised once.
This DVD is much like most of the other projects which Fat Freddy’s Drop are involved in - its well made, well thought out and brilliantly done. This does lead to some quite confusion in the DVD menu itself that are typical Fat Freddy’s Drop, abstract and quite confusing; it can be quite irritating at times.
The extras on the DVD include a little vignette entitled ‘Kiss Da Cook’ in which a chef makes a meal that is then copied by one of the members of the band, and we then watch Fat Freddy’s Drop eat the meal. This should be incredibly boring, but it’s not because it’s well produced and done properly so you can’t keep your eyes off it.
The extras also include videos from the singles released from Based on a True Story, which although a nice touch is hardly something Fat Freddy’s Drop would usually do.
Fat Freddy’s Drop are known for their own little brand of electronic reggae done to a high standard. This DVD doesn’t disappoint, taking your eyes on a journey around mainland Europe and your ears to somewhere inside your head, leaving you feeling delirious from the whole experience.
DVD’s like this leave you waiting for more. Let’s hope Fat Freddy’s Drop aren’t too far off a new album. |
