Just when the celebrities thought parodies couldn’t get any more low, another series comes along to drag their names even further into the mire…
Channel 4’s Star Stories series features a celebrity ‘A’ lister each week, with supporting roles from other well-known faces in a deeply tongue-in-cheek This is Your Life style film that surpasses recent satirical productions such as Bo Selecta! with the greatest of ease.
In this six-episode series, the celebs listed are David and Victoria Beckham, George Michael, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Guy Ritchie and Madonna, Jude Law and Sadie Frost, and Brad Pitt with former wife Jennifer Anniston. Each programme has its hilarious highlights that prides itself on providing light relief on some of the darker parts of the individuals’ lives.
Cases in point include the ‘seduction’ of David Beckham by Rebecca Loos, including the apparent naivety of Victoria who can’t see anything untoward happening whilst David is on his own in Spain for months on end, and George Michael’s incident in the toilet with an undercover police officer.
In the same episode, Matt King, playing the then firmly-in-the-closet pop star Elton John, plays one of the best supporting roles for his deeply unimpressed demeanour that has more than obvious comparisons to his role as Super Hans in Peep Show.
The pantomime performance of evil Angelina Jolie (Daisy Beaumont) in the Brad and Jen episode (called The One Where Jen’s Husband Dumps Her For A Total Bitch after the now famous Friends episode titles) is also devastatingly cruel but played in a way that befits the moment superbly.
The executive producing team of Phil Clarke and Andrew O’Connor have managed to merge the obvious hit jokes with a distinctly British twist. Note George Michael’s dad being the stereotypical kebab shop owner, and David Beckham’s full on physical assault inflicted by Argentinean players in the ’98 World Cup as national in-jokes.
With six episodes in the series, it does feel slightly undercooked, as it constantly has you wanting more satire than you could ever possibly take in. Even with this slight grievance taken on board, it’s a brilliantly concocted programme that has raised the level of pure comic talent on our television screens up to another level.
Even if American imports are all the rage on a host of television channels, Star Stories shows that no matter what comes from across the pond, us Brits can poke fun of it in a way that is unmatched by any other place on Earth.
